Description:

On this course each student will create a well fitting modern corset – this will be a single layer corset in corsetry fabrics with internal bone channels, front busk, and lacing to the back. You can choose to make an underbust or overbust corset.

Skill areas covered:

  • Understanding a corset pattern and its markings

  • Using a toile (mock-up) to perfect fit

  • Cutting out fabric and corset seaming techniques

  • Inserting a split busk

  • Hand tacking and machine stitching applied bone channels

  • Using spiral steels, flat steels and synthetic whalebone to their best effect

  • Inserting two-part eyelets

  • Lacing your corset

  • Finishing and binding your corset

You will have a choice of which corsetry fabrics you use and colour of busk and eyelets. Your corset pattern will be drafted to your unique set of measurements, and you can keep this pattern.

Your course fee includes all the materials you require to make your corset.

  • Split busk

Once you have booked onto the course we will provide you with images of the corsetry fabrics for you to choose from.

Equipment:

You have the option to bring your own sewing machine or to borrow one of our collection of vintage sewing machines. These vintage machines are often used by corset makers for their strength and durability.

If you chose to bring your own machine please ensure you are familiar with it (can thread it, change a presser foot or needle etc), and please also bring with you spare needles to fit your machine.

All other equipment will be provided.
